Mark Farrall

“I Thought I Was Going Downhill… Now I Feel Like I’m Going Uphill.”

Before Mark joined MEE-FIT, exercise had quietly slipped out of his life.

Like many people, he’d been active when he was younger. Football. Badminton. Squash. A bit of circuit training.

But then work got busy. Life filled the space. And somewhere along the way, training just… stopped.

“I sort of fell off the horse,” he said.

Mark had tried gyms before.

But the experience never quite clicked.

Headphones on.

Walk in.

Do your own thing.

Leave.

“There was a sort of loneliness to it,” he explained. “You go in, do your programme, and that’s it. I never felt motivated that way."

What he was really looking for was somewhere that gave him a reason to keep coming back.

Finding Something Different

Mark was in his 60s when he started looking again.

One day he typed something simple into Google — classes for people over 50. A few options came up.

Then a few days later, MEE-FIT appeared on his Facebook feed.

So he filled in the form.

Not long after, he got a call from Dan.

They talked through how things work here — small groups, coaching, exercises adapted if needed, and a steady focus on getting a little better each week.

“That sounded perfect for me,” Mark said.

The Small Wins That Add Up

Once Mark started training, he began noticing the changes week by week.

Nothing dramatic.

Just steady progress.

“I could bend my knees further.”

“I could lift a little bit more weight.”

Those small improvements started to build confidence.

Like many people who walk through our doors, Mark originally came with one goal in mind — losing weight.

But along the way something more important started to happen.

He began to feel stronger. More capable. More positive about where things were heading.

“I Was Going Downhill… Now I Feel Like I’m Going Uphill.”

Mark described the change in a way that really stuck with us.

“I’m in my 60s now. I just want the good days to last longer.”

Before starting, he felt like things were slowly going downhill.

Now?

“I feel like I’m going uphill. I’m getting better. I’m getting stronger.”

And that’s exactly what sustainable training should do — help you extend the good years, not just chase quick results.

More Than Just Exercise

One thing Mark didn’t expect was the atmosphere.

“It’s like a little exclusive club,” he said.

Members chat before sessions.

People know each other’s names.

Many are in a similar stage of life, with similar stories.

That sense of belonging makes a big difference.

Because showing up feels easier when you feel part of something.

Mark’s Advice

If someone feels unsure about starting, Mark keeps it simple.

“If you’re in my position and think it’s too late… it’s worth a try.”
